Umrah journey plan: from first preparation to return
Before you rely on this page: visa, permit and health rules for Umrah are set by Saudi authorities and can change at short notice. Everything marked Check before you travel must be confirmed on the official source linked beside it. This guide covers practical travel planning, not religious rulings; for the rites themselves, follow your religious teacher or your agency’s guide.

Current requirements: check before you travel
| Item | What to confirm | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| Visa | Which visa you will travel on and whether it allows Umrah. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has said holders of all visa types may perform Umrah, as reported in October 2025. | Saudi unified visa platform, ksavisa.sa, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs |

Planning timeline
3 to 6 months before
- Decide your travel window. Prices and crowds rise sharply in Ramadan and school holidays.
- Choose: a package from a licensed agency, or planning it yourself.
- Check passport validity and renew early if needed.
- Set a budget for flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, transport, visa, insurance and daily costs.
6 to 8 weeks before
- Apply for your visa through the official platform, or through your agency.
- Book flights. Consider an open-jaw ticket (see below).
- Book hotels. Walking distance to the mosques matters more than room size, especially for older travellers.
- See a doctor or travel clinic about required and recommended vaccinations.
- Buy travel insurance that covers medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.
2 to 4 weeks before
- Install the Nusuk app and book your Umrah and Rawdah permits where required.
- Get vaccinated so that proof is valid at least 10 days before you arrive, if required.
- Plan transport between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah (high-speed train, bus or private transfer).
- Prepare ihram clothing and any medicines, with prescriptions in your hand luggage.
The week before
- Recheck every item in the requirements table above.
- Print and save copies of passport, visa, permits, tickets, hotel bookings and vaccination proof.
- Confirm your airline’s baggage allowance, including any rules on carrying Zamzam water home.
Sample 10-day itinerary
One common pattern for travellers from Kuala Lumpur. Adjust for your flights, health and the advice of your guide.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Fly to Jeddah. Enter ihram before the miqat, which on most flights from Asia is crossed in the air; many travellers change before boarding. Transfer to Makkah and perform Umrah after resting if needed. |
| 2–5 | Makkah: prayers at Masjid al-Haram, rest between busy times, optional visits with your group. |
| 6 | Travel to Madinah by train or road. |
| 6–9 | Madinah: prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque, Rawdah visit at your permit time, optional visits with your group. |
| 10 | Fly home from Madinah. |
Flights and tickets: insider tips
- Open-jaw tickets (into Jeddah, home from Madinah, or the reverse) can avoid a long road trip back. Compare the total cost, including ground transport.
- Names must match the passport exactly. Name changes are usually not allowed after ticketing.
- Check the fare rules for date changes and refunds before paying. Group and package fares are often stricter. See Refund, void or change?
- Keep your booking reference and e-ticket number handy for any disruption. If your flight from Malaysia is delayed or cancelled, see your rights.
